Getting to the Grand Canyon South Rim & Getting Around

Facts checked October 27, 2026

There is no airline service into the park for regular travelers: Grand Canyon National Park Airport (GCN) in Tusayan is the air-tour base. Most visitors fly into Phoenix (about a 4-hour drive, per NPS), Las Vegas, or Flagstaff (about 80 miles / 90 minutes), then drive or take a shuttle, train or tour to the South Rim. The South Rim is open all year; the North Rim is a separate, seasonal trip about 212 miles (4.5 hours) away by road.

Do you need a car?

Mostly yes, to reach the rim. Tusayan is 7 miles south of Grand Canyon Village, Williams about 60 miles and Flagstaff about 80 miles (NPS). The South Entrance (SR 64 from Tusayan) is the busiest; the East Entrance at Desert View is 25 miles west of Cameron. A private vehicle pays $35 for 7 days (NPS fees page) and entrance stations are cashless.

Without a car: Groome Transportation runs a reservation-only shuttle from Flagstaff (Amtrak station, Pulliam Airport) via the Grand Canyon Railway Resort in Williams to the Tusayan IMAX and Maswik Lodge, three times a day (Groome schedule, checked Oct 31, 2026). Grand Canyon Railway runs daily from Williams to the Historic Village. Day tours from Flagstaff and Sedona include transport — see day tours.

Inside the park: the free NPS shuttles (included with your entrance fee) cover Grand Canyon Village, Mather Point and Yavapai, Yaki Point and South Kaibab Trailhead, and Hermit Road, which is closed to private vehicles March 1–November 30. Desert View Drive (23 miles east to Desert View) is the one South Rim scenic drive open to private cars. Details: viewpoints & shuttles.

Renting a car

If you do rent, compare the airport desks in one search rather than booking the first brand you see, and check what the rate includes (tolls, extra drivers, mileage) before you pay.

Mobile data (eSIM)

An eSIM is handy if you want data on arrival without hunting for a SIM shop or relying only on hotel Wi‑Fi. Airalo sells prepaid United States data plans you can install before you fly — confirm your phone supports eSIM and that the plan covers the days you need.
