Suggested itinerary
- Day 1: Las Vegas → Hoover Dam → Williams. Pick up at LAS and drive to the dam (under an hour). Vehicles pass a security checkpoint on the Nevada side; you can’t stop on top of the dam. The visitor center and tours are open daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m. (visitor center $15; Powerplant Tour $25 adults; parking garage $10, per the Bureau of Reclamation). Then US-93 to Kingman and I-40 east to Williams. Overnight Williams.
- Day 2: the South Rim. Drive AZ-64 north (about an hour) or leave the car in Williams and take the Grand Canyon Railway (see our railway guide). Park entry is $35 per private vehicle for 7 days; non-US residents 16+ pay an extra $100 unless they hold an annual or America the Beautiful pass (our fees guide). Use the free shuttles and the Rim Trail. Overnight Tusayan.
- Day 3: sunrise, then back. Sunrise from the rim (our viewpoints guide), then drive back to Vegas, or end in Flagstaff and drop the car at FLG.
Overnight lodging inside the park has been halted since August 31, 2026 after waterline damage; Xanterra has extended its in-park closures through November 19, 2026, and the park is on water restrictions, so bring your own water. Hotels in Tusayan are open. Check the NPS conditions page before you go.

Rental car
Pick up at Harry Reid International (LAS) and return there, or set Flagstaff (FLG) as a one-way drop-off. Starting from Flagstaff instead? Use the second button and drive the route in reverse.
One-way drop fees vary. Dropping the car in a different city from where you picked it up often adds a one-way fee, and it differs by company, location and date. Set your drop-off location in the search and check the total (fees, tolls policy, extra drivers, mileage) at booking before you pay.
