South Rim Viewpoints, Free Shuttles & Sunset
Prices & schedules checked October 31, 2026
You don’t need a tour to see the South Rim well. The park’s shuttles are free (included in your entrance fee), the paved Rim Trail links many viewpoints, and Desert View Drive is open to your own car. Schedules below are the NPS fall 2026 service (September 12–November 30, 2026).

Sunrise & sunset spots NPS calls out
- Hopi Point (Hermit Road) — “one of the most popular viewpoints for watching the sunset and sunrise because of its wide vistas”; the Colorado River comes into view to the west. Restrooms.
- Mohave Point (Hermit Road) — another sunset and sunrise spot with views of the river below.
- Pima Point — one of the best places on the rim to see, and on quiet days hear, the river at Granite Rapids.
- Mather Point and Yavapai — on the Orange route, a short walk from the Visitor Center.
For a sunset on Hermit Road, remember the Red shuttle’s last runs are around sunset — check the return times posted at the stop.
Desert View Drive (your own car)
Desert View Drive runs 23 miles east from Grand Canyon Village to Desert View and the East Entrance, with parking at every viewpoint: Pipe Creek Vista, Duck on a Rock, Grandview Point, Moran Point, the Tusayan Pueblo site, Navajo Point (the highest overlook on the South Rim) and Desert View, home of the historic Watchtower. Lipan Point is closed June 22–December 23, 2026 for rehabilitation (NPS).
