The South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is open all year and gets about 90% of the park’s visitors (NPS). Everything here is built around Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim and the three towns people actually base themselves in: Tusayan (7 miles south of the village, home of the air-tour airport), Williams (about 60 miles, where the Grand Canyon Railway starts) and Flagstaff (about 80 miles, the nearest airline airport and most tour departures). We are an independent guide, not affiliated with the National Park Service or any operator.
After an August 29, 2026 flash flood damaged the Transcanyon Waterline, overnight lodging inside the park has been halted since August 31 and the park is on Stage 4 water restrictions. The South Rim stays open to day visitors — bring your own water. Xanterra has extended its in-park lodging closures through November 19, 2026 (arrivals from November 20 proceeding as planned); Yavapai Lodge has no reopening date yet. Hotels in Tusayan are open. Check the NPS conditions page before you go.

How we pick
- Facts from the source. Fees, shuttles, closures and seasons come from the National Park Service; train times and fares from Grand Canyon Railway; lodging status from NPS and the lodge operators. Each guide lists its sources and the date we checked.
- No invented prices. We quote official fares where the operator publishes them and never quote Viator or GetYourGuide prices — those change daily.
- Independent. We are not affiliated with the National Park Service, the railway, any lodge or any tour operator.
FAQ
Is the Grand Canyon South Rim open right now?
Yes. The South Rim is open all year to day visitors. In fall 2026 in-park overnight lodging is closed while a damaged waterline is repaired, so stay in Tusayan, Williams or Flagstaff and bring your own water. Check the NPS conditions page before you go.
Do I need a reservation to enter Grand Canyon National Park?
No. NPS says there is no reservation or timed-entry system. A private vehicle pays $35 for 7 days, and entrance stations are cashless.
Which town is the best base for the South Rim?
Tusayan is closest (about 7 miles from Grand Canyon Village). Williams suits railway riders. Flagstaff has the airport, the most hotels and most tour departures, about 80 miles away.
