One Day in St. Augustine: A First-Timer’s Itinerary

Prices & schedules checked October 17, 2026

About two in five visitors to St. Augustine are here for the first time, according to the county’s 2025 visitor research. This plan covers the big four — the fort, the old streets, Flagler College and the lighthouse — and ends on the water, without spending half the day re-parking.

Morning: get oriented (9:00–11:30)

Park once at the Old Town Trolley’s Old Jail complex (167 San Marco Ave., free for trolley guests) and ride the full ~90-minute narrated loop before hopping off. You’ll see the layout of the city and decide where to spend time.

Shorter on time or budget? Ripley’s one-hour Red Train ($23.99 adult) is the alternative — see the comparison.

Late morning: Castillo de San Marcos (11:30–1:00)

Lunch & St. George Street (1:00–2:30)

Walk St. George Street toward the Plaza de la Constitución for shops and lunch. It gets crowded at midday; side streets are usually calmer.

Afternoon: Flagler College (2:30–3:30)

Late afternoon: the lighthouse (4:00–5:30)

Evening: sunset on the water or a ghost tour

Pick one: a ~90-minute sunset cruise, or the 80-minute Ghosts & Gravestones trolley (PG-13). From Nov 21, 2026 to Jan 18, 2027, swap either for a Nights of Lights tour.

Where to stay

This plan assumes you park once and get around by trolley and on foot, so staying in or near the historic downtown keeps the day simple. We don’t recommend specific hotels or rentals: we haven’t stayed in them, and prices change daily. Before you book, check the total with fees and taxes, the cancellation policy and whether parking is included.
